Knowing God

September 19, 2021

Main idea: Unless we know God personally, we won’t trust God personally.

  1. Context: Exodus 4-5

  2. Exodus 5:22-6:9
    • Moses' crisis (Exodus 5:22-23)

    • God addresses Moses (Exodus 6:1)

    • God recounts his character and actions (Exodus 6:2-5)

    • God addresses the Israelites (Exodus 6:6-8)

    • People's response (Exodus 6:9)

  3. Our response: know God personally.

Icebreaker

Complete the following: "The most difficult thing I've ever done is ..."

How does that compare to remaining faithful when you are obeying God, but things are getting worse?

Digging Deeper

  1. If you have time, read aloud (perhaps assign parts for a rousing readers theater-like experience) Exodus 5:1-23.

    • What is the chain of command as described in vv. 6, 10, and 14?
    • How did things get worse?
    • Whom do the Israelite overseers blame in v. 21?
    • Whom does Moses blame in vv. 22-23?
  2. Read Exodus 6:1-8.

    • Trace the phrase, "I am the Lord." Why does God repeat this throughout?
    • How do vv. 6-8 beautifully illustrate the concept of redemption?
  3. Read Exodus 6:9.

    • In your own words, describe the people's response.
    • Within your group, debate the merits and appropriateness of such a response.

Next Steps

  1. How does one cultivate knowing and trusting God? (No clichés, please. 🙂)

  2. How was your first week of our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting? What wins and challenges did you face?

  3. Related, how is prayer like a muscle?

  4. Finally, memorize this verse: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2)
