Icebreaker

What are the top five things people in our culture look to for satisfaction and identity?

Digging Deeper

  1. Read John 4:1-14. Why is this woman surprised at Jesus' request? What cultural barriers did Jesus cross? Why is she surprised at Jesus' offer? What does John 4:13-14 mean?

  2. Read John 7:37-39. What is this "living water"?

  3. Read John 4:15-18. How has she been trying to satisfy her spiritual longings? How do we know this plan has been unsatisfying?

  4. Revisit the icebreaker. What follows the phrase "if only" in your desires for satisfaction? What patterns do you see as you consider where are you looking for satisfaction? Are they life-giving or enslaving?

  5. Read John 4:19-24. In contrast to the woman, how does Jesus define true worship?

  6. Read John 4:25-30 and John 4:39-42.

    • How do you think the woman felt when Jesus continued to talk with her when the disciples arrived (v. 27)?
    • What does the woman do after meeting the Messiah (v. 29)?
    • What causes the Samaritans to believe (v. 39)?

Next Steps

  1. Read John 4:34-38.

    • What is the status of the fields (v. 35)?
    • How might these verses describe the opportunity in front of the English congregation?
  2. Without looking, can you say our church's mission?

  3. How do you feel about ministry not just "to the Chinese community," but "across cultures"?
