The Name - Exodus 3

September 12, 2021

Main idea: God's name saves.

  1. God calls Moses (3:1-6).

  2. God acts (3:7-10).

  3. Moses balks (3:11).

  4. God responds (3:12).

  5. Moses balks again (3:13).

  6. God responds again (3:14-15).

  7. God acts again (3:16-20).

Icebreaker

  • What does your name mean? Is there a story behind why you were given your name?
  • If you have children, what do their names mean? Is there a story behind why they were given those names?

Digging Deeper

  1. Read Exodus 3:1-15

    • How would you summarize this text with a few pictures? That is, how would you divide the text into scenes, and how would you convey those scenes with art?
    • What type of soundtrack would you use? Why?
  2. What is Moses’ concern in v. 11? Is God’s response in v. 12 an answer to Moses or not?

  3. Read John 8:54-59.

    • In light of Exodus 3:14, what is Jesus claiming here?
    • Read John 10:11. Together with John 8, why is this a shocking statement?
  4. Read 2 Corinthians 5:18-20.

    • According to this text, if you are a Christian, what are you?
    • How does that make you feel?
