 ·         In 2 Thessalonians chapters 1 and 2, when the scripture describes the time of Lord’s return, what are the special signs (hint:  Mathews 24:3-14, Luke 21:7-19) ? CHILDREN: WEEK 64 (5/13-5/19): 1THESSALONIANS 1-5 1KINGS 18-22

Mon, 05/14/2012 - 8:49am

1Thessalonians 1

1.      v7 And so you (Thessalonians Christian) became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. Are you a model Christian for others, such as your siblings? Why or why not?

1Thessalonians 2

1.      Whom should you please, God or your friends? Why?

a.      v4 On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

2.      Should we seek praises from people to do God’s work?

a.      v6 We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else….

1Thessalonians 3

1.      What can you do to other Christians living in other parts of the world (such as Iran, China, North Korea etc.) where people are not friendly to them?

a.      v10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

1Thessalonians 4

1.      How do we live a sanctified life?

a.      v3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; v4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;

2.      What kind of life does God call us to live?

a.      7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

3.      What will happen when Jesus Christ comes back the second time?

a.      15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep (died on earth). 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

1Thessalonians 5

1.      When will Jesus come back?

a.      1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. No one knows but God.

2.      What should we do while waiting for Christ to come back?

a.      6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

3.      How should we treat those who serve God faithfully (like pastor, minister, Sunday School teacher)?

a.      12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

4.      Think of one thing you can do for them.

5.      How should we treat those Christians who have fallen behind?

a.      14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

6.      How should we live out our Christian lives?

a.      16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.

1Kings 18

1.      What had Jezebel, the wife of Ahab, done? What did God want Prophet Elijah to do?

a.      v4 While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets…

b.      v1 After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land." 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.

2.      What would you do if God asks you to do something that needs a lot of courage? Will you go like Elijah with full faith in God?

3.      v17 When he (Ahab) saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?" Who was the real troubler that caused Israel to sin?

a.      Ahab did. v18 "I have not made trouble for Israel," Elijah replied. "But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the LORD's commands and have followed the Baals.

4.      What will you do when people call you names because you are a Christian?

5.      How many false prophets did Elijah have to go against?

a.      V19…And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah,…

6.      Did the false God, Baal, respond to the false prophet’s cry?

a.      v28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. v29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

7.      How long did Elijah pray? Did God respond? Why?

a.      36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again." 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

b.     One prayer, one prophet, one true God. That is the majority.

8.      Who ran faster, Ahab in a chariot or Elijah running with power of God?

a.      46 The power of the LORD came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

1Kings 19

1.      Elijah was very bold going against four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah. But why do you think he suddenly became afraid and ran for his life when Jezebel wanted to take his life?

a.      No one is perfect, except Jesus. Even the strongest person has a weak moment. When our focus is not on the Almighty God, we will see only our weakness.

2.      What was Elijah's complaint to God when he was in desert? What did God do instead?

a.      v4 while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." v5 Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." 6 He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

3.      Was God frustrated with Elijah’s attitude? Can we express our frustration to God? Can we complain to God?

a.      God was not frustrated, in fact God restored Elijah. God wants us to express everything in our heart to Him.

4.      What are the three signs that God showed to Elijah? Was God in it?

a.      Strong wind, earth quake and fire. God was not in it.

5.      How did God talk to Elijah?

a.      V12…And after the fire came a gentle whisper. Listen to God, He usually speak in gentle whisper.

6.      Who is the person God wanted him to succeed Elijah?

a.      V16…anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

1Kings 20

1.      What is the name of the king who attacked Ahab?

a.      1 Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

2.      What was Ahab’s reaction when a prophet condemned him?

a.      43 Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

3.      What do you think Ahab should react to God’s rebuke?

1Kings 21

1.      How did Ahab get Naboth’s vineyard?

a.      Through lies and murder.

2.      What was God’s judgment for Ahab?

a.      V20…he answered, "because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD. v21 'I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel--slave or free. v22 I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.'

3.      Did Ahab repent?

a.      v27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.

4.      How did God respond to Ahab’s repentance?

a.      v28 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite: v29 "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son."

1Kings 22

1.      Did Ahab prefer the lies (that sound so good) from the false prophet or the truth from a true prophet?

a.      Ahab trusted the lies from the false prophets.

2.      Do you prefer some wrong advice from your friends  (which sounds very good) or a rebuke from your parents? Why?

3.      Why did Ahab disguise as a soldier rather than a king?

a.      Ahab thought he could escape God’s judgment.

4.      What happened to Ahab in the battle?

a.      v34 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. 37 So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there. 38 They washed the chariot at a pool in Samaria (where the prostitutes bathed), and the dogs licked up his blood, as the word of the LORD had declared.

5.      Can anyone escape from God’s judgment with a lie?
